Discovering Vancouver Life Through Experiential Learning

Beyond the Classroom: Acsenda Students Explore Sustainable Tourism on Bowen Island

At Acsenda School of Management, student life extends far beyond lectures and textbooks. Through immersive experiences, vibrant student clubs, and Vancouver’s stunning natural surroundings, our learners are exposed to real-world applications of their studies — and one recent trip perfectly captures this spirit.

Last Saturday, members of the Hospitality Club took part in an unforgettable field trip to Bowen Island, led by Jian Huang, Program Faculty for Hospitality Management. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and small-town charm, Bowen Island also presents real-time challenges relevant to today’s hospitality and tourism sectors — from staff and housing shortages to infrastructure planning and sustainability initiatives

A Living Classroom in Nature

The day was more than a scenic outing — it was a field-based lesson in sustainable tourism management. Students explored how tourism impacts local communities and discovered practical strategies to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

To align with Acsenda’s commitment to sustainability and experiential learning, the group made intentional choices throughout the trip:

  • Took public transit and BC Ferries
  • Explored the island on foot
  • Used refillable water bottles to avoid plastic waste
  • Supported local, community-owned businesses

These small but impactful actions helped students understand the ethics and logistics of sustainable travel in British Columbia

Honoring Heritage and Building Connections

A heartfelt highlight of the trip came during a visit to the Bowen Island Museum & Archives, where students explored the rich cultural and historical evolution of the island. They learned about First Nations history, local industries, and one figure who struck a deep chord: Benson Flores, the first documented Filipino immigrant to Canada in 1861.

For many Filipino students, this was a powerful and emotional moment of connection and pride, bridging personal identity with Canadian heritage.

Vancouver Life Through Student Clubs

The Hospitality Club at Acsenda is one of several active student organizations that bring theory to life through networking events, guest speakers, and field trips like this one. These clubs allow students to develop leadership skills, build friendships, and explore Vancouver’s diverse industries and culture in a hands-on way.

Whether it’s learning sustainable tourism on Bowen Island, attending a local hospitality conference, or organizing on-campus events, our student clubs create a vibrant, inclusive learning environment where every voice matters.

Experience Education That Travels with You

Acsenda’s approach to education is grounded in experiential learning, career readiness, and community connection. Opportunities like the Bowen Island trip remind us that education can happen anywhere — in nature, in conversation, and in the heart of our students as they discover their place in the world.

Bowen Island isn’t just a tourist destination; it’s a living classroom. And for Acsenda students, it’s one of many steps on a journey toward becoming ethical, global-minded professionals.
