Redefining Hospitality Leadership: Gene Oliveros and the Integration of Care

Redefining hospitality leadership, our Bachelor of Hospitality Management alumnus, Gene Oliveros, has turned his leadership skills and empathy into meaningful healthcare impact, earning recognition in the field.

Gene Oliveiros from Hospitality Management Degree.

The Bachelor of Hospitality Management focuses on service, empathy, and human connection. These values extend far beyond hotels, restaurants, transportation companies, and tourism agencies. Gene Oliveros, a graduate of Acsenda, clearly demonstrates this idea through his professional journey.

Today, Gene works in home health care. Through this role, he shows how hospitality leadership can create meaningful impact in care based environments.

At first, Gene worked as a licensed nurse in the Philippines before moving to Canada. This experience strengthened his clinical awareness, accountability, and compassion. Then, his hospitality education enhanced his ability to deliver human‑centered and highly professional care.

As a result of his work, Gene received a nomination for the BC Care Provider of the Year Home Health Award. This recognition highlights how service focused leadership can succeed outside traditional hospitality settings.

Understanding the Internship Challenge.

For many students, internships mark the first major step into professional life. However, international students often face added challenges in Canada.

Gene actively applied for positions in hotel operations. Unfortunately, employers often require local experience. Because of this, he needed to rethink his approach.

Instead of giving up, Gene reflected on his strengths. He looked closely at his existing role as a Caregiver at Home Instead West Vancouver. He first connected with the organization through the Acsenda Career Fair in 2025.

At that point, he noticed a clear overlap. Both hospitality and home care depend on service quality, trust, and communication.

Reframing the Internship Experience in Hospitality Management.

After careful evaluation, Gene proposed completing his internship in home health care. He explained how service excellence and operational discipline applied directly to his role.

The academic team supported this idea. As a result, Acsenda approved the placement.

This decision showed how hospitality education continues to evolve. It also proved that leadership skills apply across many service-driven industries.

Applying Service Principles in Healthcare

Gene approaches home care with a strong service mindset. He treats each client with attention, patience, and respect. Because of this approach, he received additional recognition as Standing Ovation CarePro of the Year.

His work focuses on three key practices.

Personalized Care: First, Gene adapts routines to fit each client’s preferences. He listens carefully and adjusts communication styles. He individualizes care by adjusting routines, communication, and support models to fit each person’s needs, rather than relying on a one‑size‑fits‑all approach.

Client Participation: He encourages clients to take part in daily decisions. This helps maintain dignity and independence.

Building Trust: Finally, Gene uses emotional awareness to create stability. This approach is especially important when supporting clients with dementia.

Together, these actions improve both comfort and quality of life.

Building Resilience and Confidence

Gene arrived in Canada in 2022. At first, he worked in retail and food service roles. These jobs helped him build discipline and confidence.

However, he never lost sight of his long-term goals. “I did not surrender,” Gene says. “I reflected on my strengths and found a new direction.”

Because of this mindset, he turned challenges into growth opportunities.

The Role of Institutional Support

Although Gene’s success is personal, Acsenda played an important role. The institution supports flexible internship pathways. It also encourages students to think creatively about career options.

In addition, networking events and career fairs help students connect with employers early. These resources made a real difference in Gene’s journey. He shares

“The nomination to the BC Care Provider of the Year (Home Health) Award is a profoundly humbling experience. It confirms that caregiving, particularly when combined with the hospitality values, can provide a valuable and positive impact. This acknowledgement is not only my achievement, but it is also a sign of trust by the clients and families I attended.”

Key Lessons for Future Leaders. Gene Oliveros’ experience offers clear lessons for students entering service-focused careers.

  • Service skills transfer across many industries.
  • Innovation creates new career paths.
  • Self-advocacy helps overcome barriers.

Moreover, the Canadian home health care sector continues to grow. Because of this, leadership rooted in hospitality values will remain in demand. In his own words, Gene offers this advice to Acsenda students:

“To all Acsenda students, especially those in Hospitality Management, I encourage you to stay open to non‑traditional paths that can lead you to your goals. Remember that your skills are more transferable than you might realize, and don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself. Service excellence, empathy, flexibility, and a strong focus on guest experience remain valuable in any industry. When you lead with genuine care and professionalism, meaningful opportunities will follow.”

Conclusion

Gene Oliveros shows how hospitality leadership extends beyond physical space. His work proves that care, empathy, and service excellence matter in every industry.

Through resilience and innovation, he has redefined what hospitality leadership can look like.
