Make a Great First Impression: How to Manage Your Interview Body Language
Reference: Access Career Development | 03 June 2025
Did you know that your body language during an interview can say as much about you as your words?
Your posture, gestures, and facial expressions all contribute to how you’re perceived. For instance, crossing your arms might be interpreted as being defensive—even if you’re just cold or thinking deeply! Being mindful of your body language helps you make a confident and positive impression.
Body language habits that typically signal confidence and engagement include:
• Making regular eye contact
• Sitting upright with good posture
• Smiling genuinely
• Nodding when listening
However, if you’re neurodivergent and find some of these cues difficult to express, remember: you’re not alone, and you don’t have to force yourself into discomfort. Many organizations are becoming more inclusive in how they assess body language during interviews. If you feel comfortable, you might consider disclosing your neurodivergence ahead of time, but this is entirely your choice.
To help ease interview nerves and present your best self:
- Try calming breathing exercises before your interview
- Listen to uplifting music or an empowering podcast
- Do your research—understanding the company and role will help you feel prepared
- Practice mock interviews with a friend or mentor
Most importantly—be yourself. Let your authentic personality shine. Employers are looking to connect with the real person behind the résumé.
