On September 17th, 2024, I had the privilege of taking my Business Law students from Acsenda School of Management to visit the Supreme Court and Provincial Court of British Columbia. The experience allowed the students to observe real-life courtroom proceedings, offering valuable insights into the practical application of the theories they had been studying in class.

Court Visit Details
We departed the college at 3 PM and arrived at the court just in time to witness two different cases before it closed at 4 PM. The first case involved a dispute between a local school and a corporation over infrastructure-related issues. This case provided the students with a closer look at how legal disputes involving public institutions are handled in the Canadian legal system.
The second case focused on a property dispute between two businesses. The students observed the arguments and evidence presented by both sides, which revolved around ownership claims and contractual issues. Watching how the legal system resolves business-related conflicts gave them a deeper understanding of the complexities of commercial litigation.
Student Engagement
As with previous visits, this experience sparked the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm. Many of the students, who come from diverse international backgrounds, were eager to compare the Canadian legal system with those of their home countries. This visit exposed them to both English and French legal traditions, unique to Canada. Since many students hailed from countries like the Philippines, India, Taiwan, Mexico, and Brazil, this experience highlighted the differences between the Canadian legal system and those in other nations.
Reflection
Upon returning to the college after the court visit, the students were eager to discuss the cases they had observed. It was evident that this real-world exposure had reinforced their classroom learning, deepening their understanding of civil litigation in both public and business sectors. For students studying business law, this kind of practical experience is invaluable, as it bridges the gap between theory and practice.
I am proud to have accompanied my students on this educational journey. Watching them actively engage with the legal system was a rewarding experience, and I look forward to providing more opportunities to bring the classroom into the real world.
