The Orange Campaign
Acsenda School of Management acknowledges it is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
September 30th is observed as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. On this day, we honor the survivors of residential schools, their families, friends and loved ones as well as remember those who never returned home.
This year, the Decolonization and Indigenous Working Group of Acsenda (DIWG) is collaborating with four student clubs: Hospitality, HRM, Marketing, and MIS as well as the communications team to bring to you a month-long digital campaign to educate and raise awareness on important aspects of Decolonization, building Indigenous relations, and Reconciliation.
The weekly schedule for the campaign is:
| Week | Theme |
| Wk 1: September 2nd-7th | Raising Awareness |
| Wk 2: Sept 9th-14th | Learning, Decolonizing, and Relearning |
| Wk 3: Sept 16th -21st | Towards Reconciliation: Success Stories |
| Wk 4: Sept 24th -30th | ASM DIWG’s initiatives & Community Connections |
In addition to the digital campaign, two in-person events will be facilitated
Friday, September 6th: Visit to Bill Reid’s Art Gallery 2:00-5:00 pm
Friday, September 13th: On Campus Reflection, 12:00-2:00 pm.
The name ‘Orange Campaign’ pays homage to the Orange Shirt Society a non-profit organization, established in 2015 to create awareness of the impacts of Indian Residential School system and promote the truth “Every Child Matters”. In 2013, at the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School Commemoration Project and Reunion, former student Phyllis Webstad, shared her story of the first day at the residential school where her new orange shirt bought by her grandmother was taken from her. Phyllis Webstad founded the Orange Shirt Day and later formed the Orange Shirt Society to raise awareness about the lasting impact of the Residential school system on the individual (survivors), families, and communities.
We hope that all of you join us on this educational journey as we explore ways to engage in discussions on becoming allies and walking the path towards reconciliation.
