Real-World Learning: MIS students joined SFU Hackathon

On October 4th and 5th, four Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students in the Management Information Systems concentration —Rodrich, Uzay, Nijan, and David—represented Acsenda at the SFU Hackathon. This two-day event brought together top tech students to collaborate and compete in developing innovative software solutions for real-world challenges, creating solutions in a competitive setting.

The Acsenda team developed Leadger, a software that analyzes customer values and aligns them with company missions. The tool helps businesses understand market trends and consumer behaviour through predictive analytics. This is an excellent opportunity for the Acsenda students to apply academic knowledge to real life situations.

This project showcases the unique strengths of our Management Information Systems concentration. Where students combine artificial intelligence, machine learning, and business strategy to create a socially impactful solution.

Leadger: Technology Meets Ethical Business

The platform was inspired by the growing need for conscious consumerism. From the start, the MIS students aimed to understand users’ social and political positions and purchasing behaviour to identify companies they engage in. To analyze whether the customer may align or not align with the company values.

In addition, the app identifies alternatives to businesses that conflict with those beliefs.

Ultimately, this concept promotes ethical decision-making and encourages responsible economic behaviour. By doing so, it empowers users to make informed choices while also supporting sustainable and socially aligned businesses.

Since Leadger analyzes user behaviour and values. It then matches users with companies that align with their beliefs. The app also suggests local and sustainable alternatives.

Beyond individual use, the software collects anonymized data to generate insights for businesses and policymakers. These insights reveal hidden consumer trends and support strategic planning.

Building Leadger: How the Management Information Systems concentration teaches a collaborative journey

The ASM team used business modeling tools to shape Leadger’s concept. They applied Strategizer methods and Fishbone diagrams to refine their value proposition. Development included:

  • AI integration and machine learning algorithms.
  • Prototyping with the Gemini API.
  • Feedback from mentors and industry experts.

This process emphasized usability, ethical impact, and alignment with global sustainability goals. The students demonstrated technical skills and strategic thinking throughout the project.

Kevin Fraser, Academic Director of the Management Information System concentration, praised the students’ achievements. He emphasized the strength of the curriculum and the dedication of faculty members.

“Our students are driving innovation and making an impact. The future of MIS at Acsenda is bright.” This recognition reflects the program’s commitment to excellence and its role in shaping future leaders.

Technology’s Role in Business Transformation

In today’s fast-paced digital world, technology is reshaping how businesses operate and compete. From customer engagement to product delivery, innovation drives success. The demand for professionals who understand both business strategy and information systems is growing rapidly.

At Acsenda School of Management, our programs prepare students to lead in this evolving landscape. The BBA-Management Information Systems (MIS) concentration equips learners with the tools to solve real-world challenges using technology.

The MIS concentration blends business fundamentals with cutting-edge technology. Students explore accounting, marketing, HR, and international business alongside system design and data analytics.

This interdisciplinary approach ensures graduates can:

  • Apply technology to improve business operations.
  • Make strategic decisions using data-driven insights.
  • Lead innovation with ethical and sustainable practices.

The curriculum emphasizes practical learning, critical thinking, and global awareness. Students gain hands-on experience while developing leadership and problem-solving skills.

Our mission is to develop globally minded, resilient, and socially responsible leaders. That is the reason Leadger is an amazing example of how our graduates can perform the complex task of helping organizations communicate with the most relevant customer segmentation, increasing their profitability.

What’s Next for Leadger and MIS Students

The Leadger team plans to explore legal and ethical aspects of data use. They aim to validate the app’s potential as a tool for social change. Future steps include:

  • Consulting experts in digital law and data protection.
  • Expanding the app’s reach and functionality.
  • Empowering users to influence markets through informed choices.

This journey reflects the broader goals of the MIS concentration—innovation, responsibility, and impact.
