This isn’t a story about a class project. It’s a story about what happens when students are trusted to build like professionals. I’m Shizar Z., and I teach Management Information Systems at Acsenda School of Management. This past semester, I watched something incredible unfold in my Systems Development Using Advanced Software Tools course.
Fourteen students. Two teams. One goal: build a full health and fitness tracking application – complete with real-time data, video tutorials, and cross-platform support. Android, iOS, and .NET – all speaking to a single cloud infrastructure.

It wasn’t just about turning in some code. They were trying to make something that actually ran, across real devices. Something you could hand to a stranger and say, “Here. Try this.”
Team 2! Balanced Bites App
Each student had a role. Android. iOS. .NET. Cloud. It wasn’t theoretical. If your piece didn’t work, someone else’s didn’t either. You either built it together, or it broke apart.
The tools were real. For Android, students built in Android Studio using Kotlin and XML. The iOS app was developed in Swift using XCode. The desktop version was written in C# using .NET Core. AWS powered the backend: RDS for storage, Lambda for logic, S3 for media, and API Gateway to tie it all together.
The apps logged food, steps, activities. They tracked goals. They streamed video. And they did it cleanly. Fast. With polish.
Now here’s the kicker: class met once a week. Two and a half hours. That’s it.
The rest? That happened in DMs. Over coffee. Between work shifts. And sometimes at 1AM, cursing at a broken API call. They weren’t cramming for a grade, they were troubleshooting for a deadline.
The app had features students had never implemented before. Real sensors. Live graphs. User accounts. Cross-device sync. And they did it with the same tech companies use in production.
By the end, the teams didn’t feel like classmates anymore. They felt like co-founders. They weren’t presenting a final project – they were shipping a product.
One student said, quietly, “I never thought I could do this. Now I want to keep building.”
This is what MIS looks like when you stop playing defense and start giving students the ball. No simulations. No canned labs. Just an open field and a deadline.
What they built mattered, not because of how complex it was, but because it was theirs. Every screen. Every API call. Every moment of panic and every late-night win.
They came to class. And they left with experience.
A Career Foundation
This project is a testament to the strength of the Management Information Systems (MIS) concentration at Acsenda School of Management. MIS bridges the gap between technology and business, preparing students not just to understand how systems work, but how to build, manage, and implement them in real-world environments.
Students in the MIS concentration don’t just study theory. They work with real-world platforms, collaborate across teams, and gain hands-on experience that mirrors what today’s digital workforce demands. Whether it’s cloud computing, software engineering, database management, or systems analysis, our students graduate with the skills, and confidence, to lead in tech-enabled business environments.
