Celebrating Legacy and Leadership: A Tribute at ASM

Acsenda School of Management

As we observe Black History Month this February at Acsenda, I am reminded of the profound role that understanding diverse histories plays in enriching our collective future. This observance is a powerful testament to the resilience, innovation, and leadership of Black Canadians throughout history.

From the courageous conductors of the Underground Railroad to the intellectuals and activists shaping modern Canada, the contributions of Black Canadians have been vital. The story of Lincoln Alexander, who broke racial barriers as the first Black Member of Parliament and federal Cabinet Minister, serves as a beacon of possibility and progress for all of us.

This year, we are not only celebrating these monumental legacies but are also deeply committed to cultivating leadership within our diverse student body. Recognizing that true leadership is fortified by a robust understanding of history and societal dynamics, we focus on educational equity and access, empowering our students to become leaders who are informed and compassionate.

Our multicultural environment at Acsenda School of Management provides a unique platform for dialogue and understanding, helping to bridge cultural divides. By acknowledging and learning from the leadership and contributions of Black Canadians, we can foster an inclusive atmosphere where every student can feel valued and poised to make meaningful contributions to society.

Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to the Parliament of Canada and an unwavering advocate for social justice, once said, “Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence.” Inspired by her words, this Black History Month, let us commit to deepening our understanding of our shared history and lifting each other up through knowledge and leadership. In doing so, we ensure that our impact is lasting, and that we continue to build a legacy that transcends boundaries and endures over time.

I invite everyone to embrace this opportunity to celebrate, reflect, and act, ensuring our collective efforts contribute to a future where leadership is as diverse as the community it serves.
