By-HRM Alumna Miss Solene Alice Aboumengone Ongone

While studying at Acsenda School of Management, I noticed that we had multiple clubs associated with the diverse program concentrations offered. These clubs have played a significant role in guiding students both academically and professionally. I was part of the HRM club and remember learning how important community representation was at Acsenda. At that moment, something was missing and asked myself why there was no club representing the Afro-Black Community on campus.
After realizing how important it was for me to see Afro-students represented and acknowledged, I thought other Afro-Black students felt the same way. I waited until February (Black History Month) and contacted Hetty Yang, the Student Experience Manager, and had one of the most enriching conversations I have ever had on campus. I expressed the need for Afro students to be represented at the school, and she was willing to help if I was prepared to step out of my comfort zone and bring my ideas to life. After that conversation, I reached out to other Black students I knew on campus, and she sent an email to every Afro student enrolled.
Two weeks later, I had a meeting with several other Black students, and we collectively decided that it would be beneficial to have a club for Afro-Black students, promoting the diversity of their culture, celebrating Black excellence, and allowing them to be seen and heard. We wanted a club name that sounded rich and powerful; thus, we chose Afro Giants. This is how Alice Ongone, along with other Black students, established the one and only Afro-Giants club at Acsenda School of Management.

Since then, Afro Giants has continued to grow, hosting various activities that bring the community together and create a sense of belonging. The support from students, staff, and faculty has been incredible, reinforcing the importance of representation and inclusivity on campus.
At Acsenda, inclusivity is more than just a value, it is a commitment. We strive to create an environment where every student feels empowered to elevate their voice, celebrate their identity, and drive meaningful change. The journey of Afro Giants is a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the impact of coming together to shape a more inclusive future.
