A Celebration of Art and Resilience in Honor of Black History Month

By Marla Heasley- Student; Management Information Systems Concentration

In honor of Black History Month, Acsenda MIS student and brand ambassador Marla Heasley has found a unique and powerful way to express her support – through art. Known for her talent in painting, Marla chose to depict the protea flower, a symbol of strength, diversity, and transformation, as a tribute to Black history and the resilience of Black communities.

The Symbolism Behind the Protea Flower

The protea, native to South Africa, is more than just a beautiful bloom – it carries deep cultural and symbolic meaning that resonates with the themes of Black History Month:

  • Strength and Resilience: The protea thrives in harsh conditions, much like the Black community has persevered through centuries of adversity. The flower’s ability to flourish against all odds serves as a reminder of the unwavering strength of those who have fought for equality and justice.
  • Cultural Significance: As South Africa’s national flower, the protea represents unity in diversity, reflecting the richness of African heritage and the importance of celebrating Black culture and contributions worldwide.
  • Transformation and Growth: With its striking variations in color and form, the protea symbolizes hope and progress. Just as Black History Month allows us to reflect on past struggles and achievements, the flower embodies the ongoing journey towards equity and inclusion.

Art as a Form of Tribute

Marla’s painting of the protea flower is not just a work of art – it’s a statement of solidarity, recognition, and celebration. Through her creativity, she honors the past, embraces the present, and inspires the future.

“Art has the power to tell stories, to create dialogue, and to connect people. I wanted to paint something that represents resilience and beauty, something that symbolizes the strength of the Black community and the continuous journey of growth and transformation,” Marla shared.

Acsenda’s Commitment to Diversity and Representation

At Acsenda School of Management, students from diverse backgrounds come together to learn, grow, and support one another. Marla’s initiative is a testament to the impact that representation and creative expression can have within a community. By highlighting the significance of the protea flower through her painting, she contributes to a broader conversation about history, identity, and unity.

This Black History Month, we celebrate not only the legacy of those who have paved the way but also the voices and talents that continue to shape the future. Through her art, Marla Heasley reminds us that resilience, diversity, and transformation are not just ideas to be honored in February but values to be upheld year-round.
